This video is a time-lapsed drawing of a Diablada mask on top of a projected image of myself. Symbolizing the duality of man, and representing the complexities of cultural identity, I acknowledge my personal experience of being a hybrid. The mask I am painting represents my cultural heritage in a contemporary style. To me identity is more than just the mask we use to represent ourselves to others, but also what it’s protecting from others by the mask we exhibit.
Bolivia was once part of the Incan empire until the Spanish conquistadors reduced the indigenous population to slaves. A large part of Bolivian culture is art, dance, and music. Since the pre-Columbian/colonial period, these means of expression have come from years of suffering and oppression. Illustrating the themes and dances of the Bolivian people is an important part of understanding this culture.
