Riberalta, Beni - Bolivia
The lowlands of Beni are used to flooding during February/March. This year was one of the worst. Having family in Riberalta, I get to hear first hand what is happening: half of Riberalta is underwater, people are dead and lots of floating livestock (cattle, chickens), meaning no dairy, or meat. The bridge to Brazil has collapsed, cutting off supplies to the east, and getting to Riberalta in general is difficult enough, usually only travelled to by plane. The long difficult topography of the road that brings the food, is not an option at the moment as it is also flooded. Since Riberalta is very poor (Bolivia in general) flying in supplies is expensive, and negotiations for food between the capital are being made.
